1) Marrakech – The city Ochre

This city with a Mediterranean climate (20 degrees during the day in winter) located in the interior, in southern Morocco, at the foot of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, was founded in 1071, it quickly became an important city religiously and culturally. Currently, one counts in Marrakech just over 920 0000 inhabitants.

After Casablanca, Fez, Meknes and is one of the largest cities in Morocco

Marrakech is divided into two distinct parts – the Medina surrounded by ramparts, battlements and out, the new city Gueliz and the area of Hivernage.

The wonderful Bahia Palace (end 19 °), near the Jewish quarter of the Medina (Mellah district) with its fragrant gardens, carved doors, courtyards with beautiful ornaments, the Ryad. Come rather the afternoon because the morning is the influx of tourist buses.

The Ben Youssef Madrasa, the 16th century and restored in 1950, this former Koranic school is a gem of Amazigh-Moorish architecture, with its plaster lace finely chopped (stucco).
The Gardens of Agdal: next to the Royal Palace, they date back to the 12th century and their existence is linked to an astute management of water resources

Saadian Tombs (16th century), discovered in 1917, the wooden dome of cedar and marble columns.

The Tower of the Koutoubia, at the entrance to the medina. It is the largest mosque in Marrakech with its minaret, which rises to 70 meters high. The tower is the Spanish Moorish style

The Marrakech Museum (in the medina, next to the madrasah Benyoussef): Palace of the 19th century with a large patio, typical of Moorish art, rehabilitated into a museum by a Moroccan patron.

Djema El Fna: If known, the symbolic heart of Marrakech, known since the 16th century for its commercial activity. But it’s a meeting place, even if it is a little too touristy for some, what matters is to do! Caution still pickpockets !!!

One walks there coming to take his mint tea after a walk in the souks, or the discovery of a secret always amazed riad; busy from morning to late evening, we find it all! orange mountains, traditional food, tattoos, dental, storytellers, snake charmers, monkey trainers, Berber musicians! It’s evening, with lights flashing and ochres of the sunset, the charm and animation instead take all their dimensions, there is a side ‘Arabian Nights’ …

The House of Photography, east of the Medina
Exciting with its collections regularly renewed on the history of Marrakech and Morocco. Visits to the Souks.
Each souk has a different specialty (leather goods, jewelery, carpets, clothes, perfume, spices … obligatory haggling of course!). Either you go alone with a plan to explore, which is nice too, plan a compass
Or, if this is your first discovery of Marrakech, because you will come back for sure, you can, as I did, take a guided tour, which will be very useful and informative, and you will locate you easily. Eventually if you get lost, ask a trader the direction of the Djemaa El Fna Square, it’s the best, believe me !! )

Do not miss the Spice Place in the heart of the souks, with its displays of incredible scents and colors. And there, of course, mandatory break at Cafe Spice with its upper terrace, you can taste mint tea and spicy coffee with ginseng, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon … in short a perfume festival and voluptuous sensations !!

A must in herbalism, or we tell you all about how to cure all your ailments with plants, spices, all home-made products! a feast for the eyes anyway!

The riads Marrakech: this is really the soul of the medina!

True haven of peace, these traditional houses of marrakechi have often refined discreet entrance, an interior patio with a water feature, lush vegetation, an upper terrace overlooking the medina. Many are restored, purchased by foreign or processed in guest rooms; to stay there is a privilege. I will give you some addresses. But know that it is interesting to have a guide to explore and discover these riads.

The Majorelle Garden and the house of Yves St Laurent:

The garden of Menara, the magical charm

Palace Beldi
Here is held the festival of Marrakech laugh ‘, created by Djamel Debouze.

La Palmeraie

It includes more than 100 000 trees and was created in the 12th century by Berber rulers. To survey the Palmeraie (twenty kms, free), I recommend the carriage ride or a taxi, according to a guided path to preserve the natural site. The surrounding area is also inhabited by luxury hotels, stately homes with tennis, golf courses, swimming pool.

An enchanting that many celebrities join throughout the year. Your taxi driver will be happy to tell you their names!

Ideas trip to Marrakech and body care: Do not forget to do the walk around the walls at sunset, superb !! A must to relax: body care, massage, steam . You have a choice, because it is an art of living in Morocco. Personally, I went “to the Hands Fairy” 150 meters from the Djema El Fna. A real treat for some small euros !!
